Glossary

  • Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) - such as electric vehicles, smart thermostats, solar photovoltaic panels, heat pumps, and battery energy storage systems
  • Electrical "island" mode/islanding - One or more generators operating without a connection to an electrical grid are referred to as operating in island mode
  • Energy-as-a-Service (Eaas) - a business model whereby customers pay for an energy service without having to make any upfront capital investment. EaaS models usually take the form of a subscription for electrical devices owned by a service company or management of energy usage to deliver the desired energy service.
  • Fleet Management Company (FMC) - Organizes and coordinates work vehicles with the aim to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and provide compliance with government regulations.
  • IOU - Investor Owned Utility
  • Load-Serving Entity - Any company that (a) sells or provides electricity to end users located in California, or (b) generates electricity at one site and consumes electricity at another site that is in California and that is owned or controlled by the company
  • PSA Certification - designed to provide laboratory assessment of IoT chips with substantial security capabilities.  More about the ARM security architecture.
  • Virtual Power Plant (VPP) - A grid-integrated aggregation of many individual Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). The many DERs of any given VPP act as a coordinated unit as if they were a single, larger power plant.
